Welcome to the blog of WRA 150,
This blog was created by the students of Michigan State University who were enrolled in WRA 150 during the spring of 2014. The overview of this course is to explain how people around the world are unified. We started off talking about the origins of humanity and then branched off to the social construct of race, which led to the topic of the African American “race”. Race has been a dividing factor of the people due to its distinctions of language and skin color. Language has played a leading role in the racial divide, especially in the African American culture. Ebonics (African American language) has played a role in impacting the lives of Ebonics speakers as demonstrated in the Trayvon Martin case during Rachel Jeantel’s testimony. As a final project the students were asked to create a digital project on (Im)politeness of Rachel Jeantel and how her performance was assessed by the insiders and outsiders of the African American speech community.
